Spotting, flow and details

Spotting is light bleeding outside a period. It never starts a cycle on its own — but you can tell the app that it turned out to be the beginning, and it will move the cycle for you.

Mark spotting

Tap Spotting on Today. To add the colour and how much, open the day: tap the day in the week strip, then the bleeding section.

One section, from flow to the labels on a period.

Flow on a period day

Open the day and choose Light, Medium or Heavy. Inside a period None is the one chip you cannot pick — you were bleeding, or the day would not be in the period. You can leave it unset — a period day with no flow noted is drawn as a ring instead of a filled circle, so the calendar shows the difference.

Two more details sit there, because clinicians ask about them:

  • Clots — a chip, not a switch. Left off it reads as not noted, never as no clots.
  • Pads, tampons or cups — a number from 0 to 30 for that day. A count, not an estimate of volume.

The spotting turned out to be the start

Open that day and tap Count as period start. The period moves to that day, and every count that depends on it moves with it.

Labels on a period

A period can carry labels that describe it. Only the first one changes how cycles are counted, and the app says so on the screen: “Other labels don't change how cycles are counted.”

  • Started by a medicine — for a bleed after a progestin course. Whether these start a cycle is your answer to give, and you can change it later.
  • Breakthrough bleeding — unscheduled bleeding while on hormonal contraception.
  • Ended earlier than usual — it finished sooner than your own usual.
  • Withdrawal bleed (pill break) — a bleed in the pill-free days. See hormonal contraception.

To add one, open a day inside the period and switch it on at the foot of the Bleeding section.
